The word ‘intelligence’ has a large umbrella of meaning.

As founder of the Multiple Intelligence Theory, here is *Howard Gardner’s definition:

 

  • “The ability to create an effective product or offer a service that is valued in a culture
  • A set of skills that make it possible for a person to solve problems in life
  • The potential for finding or creating solutions for problems, which involves gathering new knowledge”

 

A distilled definition might be this: Intelligence is the ability to creatively solve problems, learn and integrate new information, and offer something of value in a culture. The skill sets we require to fulfill Gardner’s definition are unique to each person, and inevitably arise from some combination of our multiple intelligences.

The first intelligence we’ll explore in my next post will be linguistic, or “word smart” thinkers. After looking at the linguistic intelligence and ways to identify word smart learners, I’ll show you how to cultivate this intelligence at home to make learning about any subject more fun.
